Ecommerce product titles: how to rewrite them using Search Console data

Most product pages are titled the way the business thinks about the product, not the way customers search for it. Google Search Console shows you the actual words people use to find each page - and shifting your titles toward those terms, carefully, can lift traffic without any new content at all.

The mismatch that's costing you clicks

Businesses name products the way they think internally - by brand, model or range. Customers search by what the thing is and what it's for. So a page titled with a manufacturer's product code might be a perfect match for a search nobody types, while missing the phrase hundreds of people actually use. You're not losing the traffic because the page is bad - you're losing it because the title is speaking the wrong language.

How to find the real search terms

Google Search Console records every query that showed your page, even the ones where nobody clicked. Open the performance report, filter to a specific product or category page, and look at the queries. You'll see the genuine language: the words, the modifiers, the way people phrase it. Those are the terms your title should reflect - not your guesses, and not a generic keyword tool, but the real demand landing on that exact page.

Your customers already told Google what to call your product. Search Console just hands you the transcript.

Rewriting the titles - carefully

  • Shift the title toward the customer's search intent - lead with what the product is and what it's for, not the internal name.
  • Keep it readable - work the terms in naturally; a stuffed, robotic title puts buyers off and can hurt more than help.
  • Don't lose a term that's already working - if the page gets clicks from a phrase, keep that phrase in.
  • Change titles in a controlled batch, then watch - so you can actually measure whether the change moved anything, rather than guessing.

It's one of the highest-return jobs in ecommerce SEO because it needs no new content and no new pages - just better-aimed titles on pages you already have. Let the Search Console data, not your internal naming, decide what each page is called.
