Psychologist Google Maps rankings were highly local in the higher-competition panel. Among practices that reached the top three somewhere, the median furthest sampled point was 0.67 km in the 12-location core panel and 1.44 km in the extension panel.
The combined 24-city benchmark was 1.04 km. That is useful as context, not as a rule for an individual practice.
What psychologist Google Maps rankings mean for a practice owner
- Do not judge discovery from a search run inside the practice.
- Measure the broad psychologist search and the specific services the practice can accept.
- Treat each genuine consulting location as its own local market.
- Build trust through clear practitioner, service and referral information as well as reviews.
The market changed the footprint
The core panel returned a median 154 different psychology businesses per grid. The extension panel returned 54. The panel with fewer returned businesses had more than twice the sampled top-three footprint.
That does not create a national radius. It shows why a practice in central Melbourne should not use a benchmark from a smaller market to set expectations.
Reviews were not a dead end
Review count had a weak positive relationship with position for psychology practices, with a positive direction in 19 of 24 grids. The result was smaller than for dentists, plumbers or real estate agencies, but it was not evidence that reviews make no difference.
Psychology also has ethical and privacy constraints that make aggressive review solicitation inappropriate. A practice can build trust through practitioner qualifications, areas of focus, useful content, referral clarity and a professional intake experience.
How to check the practice
- Run a fixed grid for psychologist.
- Use the same points for one or two high-value service searches.
- Compare visibility with de-identified enquiry origin and available capacity.
- Identify the practices that persist where suitable clients search.
- Review location, relevance, profile structure, website clarity and reputation together.
- Make one controlled improvement and repeat the grid.
For multi-location practices, each location is its own market
A room or practitioner roster does not create city-wide Maps visibility. Every eligible location needs accurate profile and website information, and every expansion decision needs a demand and operations case.
The study did not establish an ideal branch distance or test the effect of overlapping profiles.
Availability and fit matter more than raw enquiry volume
A psychology practice can rank for a broad term and still receive unsuitable enquiries if the practitioner mix, funding options, age groups or areas of focus are unclear. The local visibility map should be read beside current availability and fit.
- Use psychologist as the broad discovery baseline.
- Measure only service searches the practice can describe ethically and support clinically.
- Track suitable intake enquiries rather than every contact.
- Keep telehealth demand separate from location-dependent Maps discovery.
- Use practitioner pages, qualifications, referral information and intake clarity to build trust.
A practical 90-day practice test
- Record a fixed psychologist grid and one appropriate service query.
- Map de-identified suitable enquiries and current practitioner capacity.
- Identify the practices that repeatedly appear where suitable clients search.
- Improve service clarity, practitioner evidence, referral pathways and the intake experience.
- Repeat the grid and compare suitable enquiries without pressuring clients for reviews.
For psychology, a smaller number of well-matched enquiries can be a better outcome than wider visibility that overwhelms intake or attracts the wrong need.
How to read the benchmark
The distance is the median furthest sampled top-three point among practices that reached the top three somewhere. It is not a guaranteed circle and does not include businesses that never won a point.
The study used one broad psychology query, 25 points in each city and one collection period. Full context is in the Google Maps ranking study.
