Physio Google Maps rankings: what changed across 24 cities

Physio Google Maps rankings were much more local in the higher-competition city panel. Among clinics that reached the top three somewhere, the median furthest sampled top-three point was 0.75 km in the 12-location core panel and 1.45 km in the lower-competition extension panel.
The combined 24-city benchmark was 1.10 km, but that average is less useful than the gap between markets. A clinic should not plan patient acquisition or new locations around a national radius.
What this means for a clinic owner
- A rank checked from reception can overstate what patients see across the suburb.
- Each clinic needs its own fixed local grid and enquiry reporting.
- The services that matter most should be measured separately from the broad physio search.
- Review growth remains worth doing, but it is not a substitute for location and relevance.
The visible area changed with the market
The core panel returned a median 138 different physio businesses across each 8 by 8 km grid. The extension panel returned 56. The top-three footprint was almost twice as large in the panel where Google rotated through fewer clinics.
That does not prove a competitor count causes the footprint. It shows why the real local result set matters more than an industry rule.
Reviews were positively linked with position
Physio review count had a positive but modest relationship with position. The direction was positive in 21 of the 24 grids.
That is a reason to keep a legitimate review process in the marketing plan, not a reason to promise a ranking after a target number. The comparison does not isolate reviews from every other advantage an established clinic may have.
For a clinic, reviews also help a prospective patient judge trust, communication and the experience of care. Run the programme for both visibility and conversion, within the ethical and platform rules that apply.
How to measure your clinic
- Run the broad physio search from fixed points around the clinic.
- Run separate grids for the two or three treatment searches that matter commercially.
- Compare the areas of strength with de-identified patient and enquiry origin.
- Record the clinics that repeatedly replace you in the top three.
- Check category, service relevance, website support, reviews and location together.
- Repeat the same grid after a material change.
For clinic groups
Do not combine all clinics into one city-wide score. One site may be strong close to home while another is weak across its most valuable suburb. Two sites may also overlap without serving the area where demand exists.
The study did not calculate ideal clinic spacing. A new site needs a business case based on patient demand, clinician capacity, access and cost, with ranking data used as one input.
Measure the searches that match your caseload
A broad “physio” grid shows general discovery, but it should not be the only measure. A clinic may be strong for sports injuries, pelvic health or post-operative rehabilitation while weak for the generic term, or the reverse.
- Run the broad physio search as the market baseline.
- Add only the services the clinic has practitioners and capacity to deliver.
- Keep branded searches separate from new-patient discovery.
- Compare visibility with initial appointments, not total appointments or repeat visits.
- Mark suburbs where the clinic can accept more suitable patients.
A practical 90-day clinic test
- Record fixed grids for physio and one priority service.
- Record initial enquiries, bookings and available practitioner capacity by suburb.
- Compare the clinics that repeatedly appear in the valuable areas.
- Improve the priority service page, practitioner evidence, profile category fit and review process.
- Repeat the same grids and compare suitable new-patient bookings.
This keeps the clinic focused on filling the right appointments. Expanding a heatmap into areas with no practitioner capacity is not a useful win.
How to read the benchmark
The distance is the median furthest sampled top-three point among clinics that achieved a top-three position somewhere in each grid. It is not a guaranteed circle and it does not include clinics that never won a top-three point.
The study used one broad physio query, 25 points per city and one collection period. Full context is in the Google Maps ranking study.
